Strategic and political position of
neutrality (`nonalignment') towards major
powers, specifically the USA and USSR.
Although originally used by poorer states,
the nonaligned position was later adopted by
oil-producing nations. The 1989 summit in
Belgrade was attended by 102 member states.
The term was originally used by the Indian
prime minister Nehru, and was adopted 1961 at
an international conference in Belgrade,
Yugoslavia, by the country's president Tito,
in general opposition to colonialism,
neocolonialism, and imperialism, and to the
dominance of dangerously conflicting East and
West alliances. However, many members were in
receipt of aid from either East or West or
both, and some went to war with one another
(Vietnam-Cambodia, Ethiopia-Somalia).
